Microfinance Institutions
An Opportunity for Broader, Lasting Change
Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) have done, and continue to do, admirable work around the world, extending greater equality and opportunity to the poor through much-needed financial resources. At E&O we believe the services provided by MFIs can be strengthened and expanded, and have a deeper impact when they are combined with providers of sanitary housing with basic plumbing, preventative healthcare and education services.
E&O provides funding only to MFIs who are introducing new or expanding existing housing microfinance products. In addition, they need to meet our social and commercial criteria in relationship to:
- scalability of their operations and social programs,
- introduction of new lines of products (e.g. housing loans),
- research and development with new technologies that may expand outreach while lowering operational costs,
- exploration of additional avenues for sustaining the social impact of the commercial loans they provide.
